Master Bedroom Makeover

It took us over a year, but we finally made over the Master Bedroom to be our little sanctuary and haven away from the rest of the world! When we moved in, the room wasn’t terribly inspiring. A mushroom carpet, sun-stained skirting boards, cropped blue curtains and a single matching lampshade. We also had nowhere near enough electricity outlets in the room and no in-built storage so those were two problems we needed to fix.

We pulled up the carpet first and managed to get rid of it on Facebook Marketplace. Luckily, we had the lovely floorboards underneath, that we also discovered in the Jungle Room. The room is actually really big for a standard three bedroom British semi-detached house, so we had plenty of room to play with.

As the Master bedroom is at the front of the house and North facing, it only gets the morning light. Therefore I decided to keep everything light, bright and white. Sometimes painting an entire room white can look stark and lacking in character. To combat this, we introduced a load of different textures and layers to the room. The ornate panelling was super fiddly to do, but really transforms the room and plays with the shadows on the walls. I love symmetry, so we decided to do a dado rail with 10cm between each bit of beading.

We’re slowly swapping all the skirting within the house, to these high boards, which just elevate each room so beautifully. The paint is also the classic white that we’ve used throughout the rest of the house. Cheap as chips, but a classic colour and perfect white. The colour covered the walls and the skirting boards. We went for a gloss finish on the floorboards as the Jungle Room floor hasn’t faired well being matte white. The gloss is so much more hard wearing and stays cleaner without staining.

A friend re-did the electrics for us, creating a double plug socket so we had symmetry either side of the bed. He also turned the single socket by the door into a double for extra power and swapped out the light switch for us. All brass fixtures which elevate the room. If you’re based in Devon, Pete is really professional, got the job done super quickly for a great price!

We’re also really lucky to have two good size windows in the room, drawing in natural light and helping to pull together that symmetry. Neither Ben nor I are particularly bothered about light in the room at night, so we went for really light white curtains from Ikea. The floor to ceiling length of them helps the room feel bigger and more airy, as well as making the ceiling feel higher. Pulling the curtains back are one of my favourite amazon finds. Such a simple design, and look far more expensive than they were. They also go perfectly with the brass electricity fixtures.

The two main purchases for the room were the bed and the wardrobes. We toyed with the idea of going bespoke for the wardrobes, but in the end decided that Ikea Pax wardrobes would be the most versatile for us. I used the Ikea Pax Planner to decide exactly what we needed. Settling on one corner wardrobe, a double to the right and two singles and a double to the left. Every bedroom needs a full length mirror, so we used mirrored doors to help pull in more natural light. Right next to the door, we installed a tall billy bookcase to house my handbags. I’ve still not decided whether this will be its forever home. For the time being it adds some colour to the room, but eventually we may replace it with a little dressing table and lamp.

You guys helped me choose the bed over on Instagram. It’s a super affordable bed, easy to put together and feels really sturdy. To finish off the rest of the room, we turned to family furniture. These bedside tables, used to be my grandmas and I have the matching furniture in my childhood bedroom. The lampshades were filthy and lamps didn’t work, but with a little elbow grease and help from my mum, we got the lampshades looking brand new again. The lamps just required new fuses and they too were good as new.

There are two pieces of art in the room. One piece I painted myself and the other is a vintage oil painting by R. Rosini. To finish the ambiance, we have a Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir candle on each bedside table to fill the room with the most gorgeous scent.

I’m so pleased with the way the Master Bedroom has turned out. It really feels like our little safe haven and has been such a refuge during the third lockdown. I’d love to know what you think? Anything you would have done differently?
