It’s safe to say this Dalgona Coffee has gone viral after lots of people find themselves with more time on their hands and the ingredients in their cupboards to be able to make it. TikTok has become many a households addiction during lockdown. Us included. A positive, fun escape, sandwiched between 15 second videos of people being silly or creating things. Giving us many fabulous memes and voiceovers. Dalgona Coffee is the latest to that list.
I turned my hand at making it today. The simplest recipe for the most delicious, smooth coffee flavour.
You can make it hot or cold, but with the weather so beautiful at the moment, I decided to make an iced coffee. The Dalgona Coffee is slightly bitter, but over the iced coffee, it tastes incredible.
Known as Phenti Hui (whipped coffee), it originated on the Indian subcontinent, where it’s been around for many years. It was made popular by a Korean Actor on a TV show, then across YouTube and then went viral on TikTok during the Corona Virus Pandemic.
2 tablespoons instant coffee
1 espresso shot
2 tablespoons icing sugar
2 tablespoons water
1 cup oat milk
- Fill a glass with ice
- Pour the oat milk over the ice
- Let the espresso shot cool, then pour over the oat milk
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the instant coffee, sugar and water using an electric hand whisk, until it forms stiff peaks.
- Pour over the iced coffee and serve!
I’ve found that stirring the coffee before drinking, helps with the bitterness as it blends with the oat milk and softens the flavour. I’m also going to play with this recipe over the next few days. As I can imagine it would be a delicious icing on a coffee cake. Let me know if you try the recipe!
