Choosing my designer handbag was such a hard decision. I had a budget of £1500 (an obscene amount for a handbag, but we’ll come back to that) and wanted something that would wow people, but I also wanted something that I would always love, wear constantly and the bag had to be timeless. A lot easier said than done.
There were a few questions I asked myself before taking the plunge, hopefully they might help you too!
What is my budget?
Budget is probably the key element of this. You should never spend more than you can afford and you should always ask yourself if there is anything more important than splurging on one item. If there is, wait a bit!
Which brand do I choose?
Once you’re settled on budget, you need to have an idea of the brand in mind. If you’re making a timeless purchase, I would always go for a timeless brand. My favourites include; YSL, Chanel, Hermes, Bulgari, Chloe, Valentino, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Actually, the first bag I ever fell in love with was a Chloe Paddington and I still to this day, love it (one day it shall be mine!)
What colour do I go for?
Most colours can be classic depending on the brand. Colours that will stand the test of time and be the most versatile however are more muted colours… Black, cream, nude and powder colours are your best bet.
How do I decide on the material?
The fabric and the overall look of the bag should be a huge factor when you’re making your decision. Patent is one of the hardest materials to look after. It’s easily scratchable and warps in too much heat. Similarly satin and silk fabrics are also tricky. Croc style prints and pebble leather bags are great because the material is super long wearing and quite versatile to be glammed up in the evening or dressed down in the day.
What colour hardware will I wear most?
The hardware is tricky. If I’m spending a lot on a bag, there’s no reason why I would want a subtle piece and I love a brand with a strong logo, then it’s deciding on the colour; gun metal, gold, silver, rose gold… there are so many possibilities. Luckily, because I don’t wear a lot of jewellery, I can get away with any hardware. I chose gold because I loved the two colours of my bag together and knew I could style it up in all seasons.
Where should I buy my bag from?
Always use a reputable website to purchase your bags. Selfridges, Harrods, Farfetch, Net a Porter, Harvey Nichols are all great places you can buy designer bags from in the UK. I bought my bag from Farfetch and was really pleased with the service.
I plan to wear my bag a lot to get the most out of it. After all, the more you wear it, the cheaper the bag becomes per wear and the better an investment it becomes.
