There aren’t many feelings that can equate to what you feel when you’re in the middle of the countryside. Standing in a field, nothing but woodland surrounding and the living, breathing hedgerows to keep you company.
In the summer, you’ll find me with bare feet picnicking in the meadows and paddling in the streams, but while the ground is still damp and the grass hasn’t quite covered the mud, nothing but a pair of welly boots will do. They allow you to run freely through the streams and muddy woodland while your feet stay dry and warm.
Muck Boots* very kindly sent me a pair of their wellies to put through their paces. While at home in Devon for the weekend, there wasn’t a better time to test them out. A neighbour had kindly agreed to flatten one of our fields as he was passing with his tractor and roller, so we pulled on our boots and stopped the country traffic to allow him to reverse into the field –which definitely sounds easier than it is! The wet earth was flattened down and levelled and as the tractor and roller pulled away, each little grass blade popped back up in a salute to the sunshine being cradled by clouds.
We stomped behind the roller, squashing down the last of the giant tyre tracks with our wellies. Clumps of thick, heavy mud stuck to our treads and left us wading out of the field like astronauts on the moon. A bottle of whiskey was swapped for the favour along with countless thank you’s while we stopped the cars once more to allow the tractor to ease out of the gate and trundle on, back up the hill. We immediately headed to the stream, to wash off our boots in the gently flowing water. The dogs, barked at rocks in the bottom of the clear pools as we teased them, flicking cool water towards their noses which they chomped their jaws at trying to catch the tiny droplets.
I’ll always love wearing a pair of heels and a gorgeous dress to dinner or drinks in the city, but sometimes all you really want is to pull on your wellies and squelch through the mud again.
The Muck Boots definitely have my seal of approval. They’re wonderfully comfy and well fitted, with a soft insole to keep your feet feeling as though they’re in slippers.
