When you move to a new area, it’s always nice to have a local hangout. A local bar or pub is an awesome way to get to know new people and find out more about your area. Our local, The Washington, has just undergone a makeover, and now I really think everyone should know about it.
It’s bright and airy and an old converted hotel. We popped along for drinks during the week and the lovely bar man gave us a few vouchers for free drinks and a BOGOF roast. Of course, we immediately booked in for a roast that Sunday.
We also made good use of those drinks vouchers;
Every piece in the pub has been carefully thought out and I especially love those square glass lights. The chairs are soft brown squidgy leather that you can just sink into. The Gentleman loved them, but I couldn’t eat sitting in one (this is where I hashtag *short people problems*) Especially when the food came out and I knew it demanded all my concentration!
We both had the pork; succulent meat with crispy, perfected crackling, sweet caramelised onions and a courgette and pea mix. So good, I almost managed it, but luckily I had a Gentleman on hand to polish off my leftovers!
It’s a well known fact that you have two stomachs right? One for mains and then one for pudding. My pudding stomach was still empty and there was a peach and raspberry crumble calling my name. It came with a green apple sorbet, which I thought was strange when I read and even stranger with the pudding. An acquired taste lets say, but I just put it to the side and let The Gentleman have it. It didn’t detract from the yumminess of the crumble!
After lunch, we had permission to explore. I’d spied a secret bookcase last time we were here and had been dying to see what was behind it. We snuck away from the other diners to explore what was behind.
The bookcase opened up to a long corridor, followed by a staircase leading down to the basement and a secret bar. This is Martha’s bar – most nights they have something going on and you can even hold parties here.
I’ll definitely be back for some secret bar antics soon!
