When Rowntrees recently got in touch to ask if I wanted to be a Taste Tester for their new sweets, the seven year-old in me typed my reply before my brain even had time to process the email ‘YAAAAAAAAS!’
A few weeks later, and a box containing rainbow tissue paper and two plain silver packets arrived on my doorstep wrapped up in multicoloured ribbon, and it took seconds for me to process what it was.
Ripping open the packets, one contained sugar coated sweets, some sour and some very familiar to me as an old childhood favourite; fruit pastilles. Bringing back all sorts of memories of my dad passing them to us between the pews in Church to keep us quiet between hymns. The other packet contained less familiar newer sweets that were just as delicious; the ice-creams being my absolute favourite.
It took everything in my power not to gleefully stuff them all into my mouth at once before taking the photos of them, after all this was a job and not to be taken lightly.
There were a few delays in the factory as the final sweets were created and perfected, but I am so excited to reveal the final product and feel so privileged to have been able to try them before they were available.
Now, I have to say I feel a little silly. Announcing that I was trying Rowntrees new sweets on my Instagram, I wasn’t actually sure what was new about them – they just seemed to be Fruit Pastilles and Randoms (not that Fruit Pastilles and Randoms aren’t amazing, because they are!) but I was just a little confused.
My confusion was finally cleared up on Friday when a second white box arrived on my doorstep with two new packets in. It turns out, I wasn’t wrong at all because the sweets ARE exactly the same BUT amazingly are 30% less sugar. That, I didn’t guess and neither did all the other lucky people that were also taste testers. Ben and my siblings didn’t seem to notice either when both packets were demolished in record time on our picnic yesterday.
You can get your hands on the new Rowntrees (30% less sugar!!) bags of yumminess for just £1.24 from Tesco now!
It has been so much fun working on this project with Rowntrees and living out a childhood dream of testing sweets and I feel so lucky to have been paid to do it too – I hope you have enjoyed following along on the journey with me!
